"All Is Water" Philosophy of Water
|
This page under construction - please check back in a few years. ;-)
Seriously, I don't know when I'll ever do this page.
The title of this website, 'All Is Water', comes from an ancient Greek philosopher named Thales of Miletus. According to Aristotle (in Metaphysics), Thales taught that "all things are water." Aristotle himself included water as one of the four basic elements, along with earth, wind and fire.
Heraclitus had the insight: "You can't step into the same river twice, for other waters are ever flowing on." Then another guy (whose name escapes me) came along and said you can't step in the same river even once, because it's always changing.
I know one thing. Water affects people emotionally. Kids with a water hose, families at the lake, a town square with a fountain in the center, a nice rain. People are drawn to water and are fascinated by it. On the flip side, you have the whole water torture thing. But I digress.
The point is, philosophy and water go back a long time, and there is probably a lot to know on the subject... when I have time.
