April 18th, 2004 Virtual Reality, an interesting term in itself, is even more interesting to me because it came into being during my lifetime. I love to know the origin of words or phrases, and to be here at the origin of such a powerful phrase is exciting. It's definition is not settled and will always be evolving, since the idea it expresses is insatiable. So it's conceivable that any of us could affect it's eventual meaning.
The first virtual reality device I came in contact with as a child was a View Master stereo 3-D viewer. Whether it was story about Donald Duck or John Glenn, a View Master brought it to life. That's the essence of why people create virtual reality material and why people respond to it. Think of the movie Matrix. People (like me) loved the first installment because it highlighted a complex virtual reality.
April 15th, 2004 Virtual Reality (VR) has nothing to do with water per se. But it is a great (and under-used) tool for conveying ideas to people. Soon I'll post a series of Quick-Time VR Panoramas and then some Stereo 3-D images, and work my way up to 360-degree rotatable objects. Get a pair of red/blue glasses and stay tuned. This'll be fun.
For now I'll let you in on two virtual reality projects I've been working on for some time. One I call the Whitehouse Project and the other is called the FBI Project. I use the Half-Life game engine World Craft to build 3-D worlds
